The Rockingham Redbacks men’s Willow Bridge Cup side won a close contest against Joondalup Lakers on Saturday afternoon. Although the game meant nothing to Rockingham as they had secured top spot it meant a great deal to Lakers as a win and other results going their way it could mean a second place finish to them. As this was the last game of the home and away season there was a large crowd on hand to witness the Redback’s play there last game at home.
Lakers really took the local side to task in the first half with both sides being evenly matched and both sides counter attacking at every opportunity.
Both sides had their chances in the first half but the solid defence saw both sides scoreless going in to the half time break. Rockingham did appear to have the edge in the last 5 minutes going into the break which gave them some confidence.
At the resumption of play the pressure was again on both defences with Rockingham’s Brad Thompson & Brenton Smith leading the way. Keeper Lachlan McDonald also pulled off some miraculous saves to keep Lakers out. As the half wore on Rockingham started to show some authority on the game and started to turn the screws on Joondalup. Nick Gerrard capped this pressure off with a field goal at 19 minute mark. Olly Bond followed this up 5 minutes later with another tomahawk field goal to almost seal the game.
Lakers responded with a short corner goal 10 minutes to go giving them some hope but again the superior defence from Rockingham denied them at every opportunity.
Rockingham now play AHG sides Subs on Wednesday 8:30pm followed by OGMHC on Saturday 5:15pm both at the Perth Hockey Stadium, for the right to be promoted next year.
