Rockingham’s dominance over the Willow Cup continued on Saturday with a comprehensive 5-1 win over Newman Knights. Unlike the 2 previous games the Redbacks started reasonably well and controlled the game from the onset. Newman who have been a threat to most of the completion were equal to the task. They flooded their defence which made penetrations in the circle very difficult for the home side. Rockingham did manage a couple of short corners but were held scoreless till the 17 minute mark when Shaun Ford scored in a very congested circle after several shots on goal had been attempted by several players. This was the only goal for the half although the Redbacks dominated the play.
The second half as per the previous games the home side stepped up the tempo and came out firing.
Matt Martin show his sheer strength when he has control over the ball to drive into the circle which Tom Hunter superably finished off. Nick Gerrard continued his dominance as one of Rockingham’s leading goal scorers with 2 goals for the game. The first courtesy of a penalty stroke was awarded after the ball had found the back of the net but the whistle had gone. The second was a short corner a few minutes later. Hunter who was moved the left side also showed some great determination to drive along the back line to set up Martin for Rockingham’s 5th goal. Newman did get a late consolation goal minutes from the end but the game was well out of their reach by that stage.
