The Rockingham Redbacks hosted Modernians at Lark Hill on Saturday afternoon and in front of a loyal band of supporters and put on a goal scoring bonanza to crush Mods 7-1.
Mods who are third on the ladder who have been taking points from teams in the top of the competition were no match for the Redbacks who dominated the game from the onset. The first half was relatively quiet on the score board with only 2 goals being score and didn’t reflect the Redbacks dominance. Rockingham’s Nick Gerrard scored both goals in the first half from a short corner variation that had the Mods defence all at sea. Rockingham’s dominance started with the 2 fullbacks Brenton Smith & Brad Thompson. These two combined well with the flank halves Todd Ford & Ryan Hentschke to ensure the ball stayed in the Redbacks forward line to such an extent these defenders become attackers. Rockingham’s policy of blooding young stars of the future was again on display when Jake Williams and Brody Capewell both took the field and impressed.
The second half was only 7 minutes in when Gerrard had his hat trick courtesy of a penalty stoke. Matt Wells and Tom Hunter also added to the score line with Hunters goal a highlight as this was a team goal with several players involved in what looked more like a training drill than a game.
The sixth goal had a little controversy as to whose goal it was Gerrard propelled the ball goal wards but Hunter touched the ball on the line but was deemed over the line already giving Gerrard his fourth goal. Mods did get a late consolation goal. Henstscke capped of a great afternoon for the home side with a goal in the closing stages of the game.
The Redbacks now take on second placed Peel in the Challenge Cup at Perth Hockey Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 5:00pm. These side have had great duels over the years on promises to be again as Peel is the only side to beat the Redbacks this year.
