The Rockingham Redbacks Men’s Willow Bridge side took on Modernians at Perth Hockey Stadium on Saturday evening under atrocious weather conditions. Rockingham were able to overcome not only the weather, but the opposition as well with a resounding 4-nil victory.
Mods who are also in the top 4 in the competition weren’t about to suppress the Redbacks in any facet of the game. Rockingham controlled the game from the onset with many penetrations in the circle that resulted in many shots on goal, but Mods last line of defense, their keeper, was up to the task and kept them in the game till half time. No goals were scored in the first half.
In the second half Rockingham continued their dominance and were able to open their account when Hardev Singh scored from a penalty corner with a drag flick 7 minutes into the half. This was followed up 5 minutes later with a second penalty corner goal, in which Singh was part of the variation that finished with Brett Webb flicking the ball high into the top of the goal in spectacular fashion.
During the half the Mods keeper repeatedly made many saves, but was unable to keep out a shot from Christian Oskam who pounced on the third consecutive save from the keeper.
Olly Bond capped of a great performance from the Redbacks slotting the fourth and final goal seconds from full time.
Although the win was a great team performance Coach Michael Nobbs singled Bryan Taylor with an outstanding performance in the midfield which resulted in Rockingham being able to control the ball for long periods during the game. Also mentioned was Brad Thompson who repelled many attacks from Mods with a great exhibition of tackling which saw many turn over’s for Mods.
The win now sees the local side second on the ladder with a large buffer between them on third place.
