The Rockingham Redbacks Willow Bridge Cup side hosted North Coast Raiders on Saturday afternoon and saw Rockingham extend its unbeaten record to 10, winning 5-0.
The Redbacks didn’t have it all their own way in the first half with Raiders able to match the local side. Rockingham started very slowly in the first half and were unable to work as a cohesive unit. This allowed Raider to counter attack through some uncharacteristic turn over’s by Rockingham. Rockingham did manage to pepper the goal but many were wide of the target and didn’t pose any problems for the Raiders defence. It wasn’t till minutes from half time that Rockingham broke the deadlock when Nick Gerrard smashed the ball high in the net giving them a 1 nil lead at half time.
The second half started much better for the Redbacks when Gerrard drag flicked a short corner gaol in the opening minutes. Raiders continued to push hard for the middle part of the half until Rockingham found another gear and dominated the last 15 minutes of the half. Matt Wells slotted another goal from the second short corner. Brad Thompson moved from fullback to centre half paid instant dividends scoring his second goal of the season with a tomahawk shot 2 minutes later. The team’s cohesion returned for the last goal in which the forwards and the midfield combined to string several passes together and go into attack were Shaun Ford had a very easy shot on goal.
