The Rockingham Redbacks Men’s Willow Bridge side put on an awesome hockey display against Modernians on Sunday night at the Lark Hill Sportsplex.
Mods didn’t have any answers for the rampant Redbacks, going down 9-3 to the home side. The Redbacks dominated the game from the start and within 2 minutes Hardev Singh had his first goal from a short corner with a drag flick that was too good for the visitors defense. Shaun Ford back this goal up 2 minutes later showing great poise in the circle with a brilliant strike of the ball to smash it high into the goal. The speed of the ball was such that the keeper didn’t move till after the ball was past him. The home side maintained their dominance and were able to add another 3 unanswered goals. Singh replicated his first goal with another short corner, and Ford and Olly Bond added to the total. Mods did manage to stem the flow of goals with their only goal for the half at 25 minute mark. The home side replied when Singh finished the half off scoring a hat trick from another short corner.
Mods started the second half much better and were able to gain some possession, but without scoring any goals. This possession did however deny Rockingham from scoring until Brett Webb showed off his silky skills to weave some magic through the defense scoring his first goal. Tom Hunter also scored soon after to put the home side up 8-2. Mods didn’t capitulate and scored twice mid way through the half, one from a penalty stroke and the other a field goal that was repelled, but the umpire who was in a good position deemed the ball had crossed the goal line. Webb finished the game off with his second goal 2 minutes before full time.
The win consolidates their top position on the ladder but Peel are within striking distance and the home side will need to keep winning to ensure a top 2 finish.
