The Rockingham Redbacks travelled to Perth Hockey Stadium and in showery conditions accounted for Harlies 6-1. Harlies didn’t let the fact they are at the opposite end of Premiership ladder show and made Rockingham work hard for the entire first half. Rockingham started very slowly but did manage to have several shots on goal but struggled to find the back of the net. Midway through the half, after several short corners Olly Bond standing in front of goal deflected a hard hit into goal to bring up the only score for the half. Rockingham had the majority of the play for the remainder of the half but a lack of composure in front of goal cost them dearly.
After some stern words from Bryan Taylor the Captain during the break Rockingham dominated the second half. It only took 5 minutes for Matt Wells to score a goal from another short corner with a drag flick. The following period although the Redbacks were camped in their forward zone and having many shots on goal were unable to increase their lead.
Harlies did however mange to get a goal against the flow to put them in striking distances. In
The last 10 minutes the Redbacks took the brakes off and scored 4 goals.
Wells produced another short corner goal and Nick Gerrard scored 2 goals in 2minutes.
One of which showed his sheer class when he beat several defenders and should have earned several short corners and a penalty stroke with Harlies desperate to stop him but great umpiring saw the whistle held off giving Gerrard a difficult but successful flick at goal.
Shaun Ford added the last goal 30 seconds from the end with a great team goal.
The win makes Rockingham’s lead on the Ladder unsurmountable with 3 games still to be played.
This puts them straight in to their second Grand Final appearance in a row but more importantly gives them the opportunity to play in the promotional games against the bottoms side of the AHG league.
