The Rockingham’s Redbacks dominance of the Willow Bridge Cup continued on Saturday night when they compressively bet North Coast Raiders 7 Nil at the Lark Hill Sportplex.
Under clear skies and freezing temperatures the Redbacks took only 5 minutes to score their first goal courtesy of a short corner in which Prabh Singh pounced on a rebound from the pads for his first goal. This was followed up several minutes late by a brilliant individual effort from Olly Bond. After receiving the ball in defense he ran three quarters of the field, beating a number of Raiders defenders along the way and driving the ball past the keeper for one of the best goals of the day.
Prabh Singh scored his second when he linked up with Shaun Ford to passing the beyond the control of a flat footed defense. This teamwork gave Singh an easy shot a goal.
To Raiders credit, they applied a bit of pressure in the last ten minutes of the half which did break Rockingham’s dominance but they were unable to score.
Rockingham again stamped their authority on the second half when Shaun Ford slotted in a goal after some congestion in the circle, scoring the first goal for the second half. Bond scored his second, which was nearly as spectacular as his first, when Hardev Singh smashed the ball hard along the base line and Bond received the deflection giving the keeper no chance at all.
Hardev Singh chipped in with 2 goals of his own late in the half both from short corners.
Although the score board shows Raiders were badly beaten, they never gave up throughout game yet were unable to break the Redbacks midfield defense which was lead by Bradley Thompson and aided by Allan Alderson. The pair did so well that the keeper Lachlan McDonald kept a clean sheet and in fact didn’t touch the ball all game!
