The final game for the Rockingham Redbacks Willow Bridge Cup side in the Promotional Series was played last Tuesday night which proved to be the a close and intense battle with Peel Rebels. The game had to go into extra time before Rockingham got the golden goal, finally winning 5-4.
The game was a dead rubber as far as Rockingham was concerned but Peel had to at least get 1 point for the game to gain enough points to be promoted to AHG next year. Under the points system if the game is drawn at full time the loser in extra time will get 1 point of the 3 points at stake with the winner taking the other 2 points.
The local Derbies have always been played with a lot of determination and passion and this game was no exception.
Peel scored 1st when an uncharacteristic mistake on the last line of defence saw them pounce on a mistrap to score their first gaol only 6 minutes into the game. The middle part of the first half was even without either side scoring till the last 10 minutes when Peel added another field goal. Rockingham replied soon after with a penalty corner goal from Nick Gerrard.
The instructions that Coach Neil Hawgood gave to Rockingham at half time turned the game around with the Redbacks controlling the game and adding 3 unanswered goals with Gerrard adding another penalty corner goal. Shaun Ford and Brody Capewell scored field goals to extend the lead to 2 goals. Capewell’s goal was his first at this level and he is part of the young talented group that have been given some exposure this year at this top level. Peel determined to be promoted threw all they had at Rockingham and in the last minutes scored twice to force the game into extra time and gaining the valuable point they needed. Rockingham were also equally determined to win as they wanted to go into the Grand Final next week knowing that they would have the edge over Peel who will also be there. It took only 3 minutes in extra time for the Redbacks to come up with the golden goal to eventually win 5-4.
