The Rockingham Redbacks Willow Bridge Cup side travelled to Arena Joondalup to take on Joondalup Lakers on Saturday afternoon and played one of their best games in the past few weeks, which saw them win 5-2. Arena Joondalup is feared by all visiting clubs as it’s the home side that usually has the upper hand and had been the case with Rockingham. It had been several years since the Redbacks had won there and to break the hoodoo with a great win was pleasing to Coach Michael Nobbs.
A very determined Rockingham dominated the game from the start with a lot of forward pressure which tested Joondalup’s deep defence who were up to the task and frustrated the Redbacks.
Rockingham’s fullback pair of Brenton Smith & Brad Thompson were the back bone of many of the Redbacks forward moves as well as denying Joondalup their counter attacks.
Matthew Wells proved once again why he is the leagues number 1 scorer and produced something special for Rockingham’s only goal for the half. Joondalup made the most of limited opportunities to bring the scores level at half time.
The league leaders Rockingham stepped up a gear after the break to score 2 goals in the first 10 minutes courtesy of Shaun Ford & Tom Hunter. A slight lapse in concentration let Lakers get 1 back almost immediately. Undeterred Rockingham continued to control the game and again dominated the attack. Christian Oskam scored a brilliant drag flick from the 4th short corner of the game to almost put the game out of reach of Lakers. Captain Bryan Taylor sealed the game near the end with field goal on the run.
With the season at the half way mark Rockingham has had 7 wins and 1 loss of the 8 games in the first round which see them sitting on top of the ladder with a 5 point buffer to 2nd placed Mandurah Rebels.
