The Rockingham Redbacks Willow Bridge side played Peel in the local derby on Saturday Night in front of a large group of supporters from both camps. Peel had to win to make the promotion & relegation games that start next week. This meant they had more to play for, and it showed on the field as they won the hard fought encounter 2-0.
The game was very even throughout, with both sides having opportunities to score however both teams were unable to break the dead lock to half time.
Peel came out in the second half and stepped up a notch, scoring their first goal in the 5 minutes from the restart. The Redbacks applied pressure to the visitors but were unable to bring the game back to a level footing. Peel scored again with 12 remaining to put the game out of reach of the home side. The home side, being slightly under manned due to injury and work commitments, still played as well as the desperate visitors let them.
Rockingham will be back to full strength for the promotion and relegation games, which start this week. They play the bottom 2 sides from the Premier League above and Peel in a round robin to have the right to be promoted to the next level. The round robin games are play over 9 days at Perth Hockey Stadium starting on Wednesday.
At the completion of the home and away games, the home side were Minor Premiers being 4 points clear of second placed Peel. Rockingham had fantastic statistics for the season having won 12, lost 3 and drawn 1. Goal scoring was a highlight with 63 scored and only 26 let in. Also, having 3 players in the top 4 of the League scorers was an indication of how well the team performed this season.
