The Rockingham Redbacks played Peel Rebels in the Willow Bridge Cup Grand Final on Saturday at the Perth Hockey Stadium and were soundly beaten 6-1. The Redbacks being Minor Premiers went in reasonably confidant, having beaten Peel 3 out of there 4 meetings, but were soon on the back foot.
Peel reeled of 3 goals in the first 15 minutes from which Rockingham never recovered. Rockingham did contain them for the rest of the half but weren’t able to make any headway on the score board.
At the half time break Rockingham still had the belief they could come back as in their previous encounter they had given Peel a 2 goal head start but come back to win. Peel the reigning Premiers stamped their authority on the game with 2 further goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Coach Neil Hawgood made some positional changes to give the Rockingham side every chance to score a goal which eventually saw Todd Ford get one past the keeper but the game was well out of their reach by then. Peel soon replied to run out easy winners 6-1.
The win was Peels third Grand Final in a row, having beaten Rockingham in the last two.
