Wendy Wales from Rockingham in the Fremantle Peel region is the combined Term 1, 5 Star Community Coach Award winner for Western Australia.
Wendy is a new, eager coach to the Active After-school Communities (AASC) program, representing the sport of hockey and her club, the Rockingham Hockey Club.
Wendy is very professional – always punctual, well planned and represents her club to the best of her ability. She is very enthusiastic with the AASC participants, utilising games in a safe and fun way that help to develop the skills associated with hockey.
Wendy aims to maximise participation and cater for all ages and ability levels in each of her sessions. She is responsive to the children’s needs and will change activities when needed to maintain high involvement and enjoyment levels. Wendy recently delivered in the AASC program at a school with a high indigenous population, who are usually only interested in AFL. The numbers for her sessions remained very high and the students showed an open mind about the sport, so much so that the school asked to extend the four week program to the full seven weeks.
Wendy has had positive feedback from every site that she has coached at over the last 12 months. One school in particular was hesitant about using external delivery, but after seeing the quality sessions that Wendy provided is always happy to have her back.
Wendy is a terrific community coach and an asset to the AASC program. She is a deserving recipient of this award.
